Pillars of OLE Ghana’s General Model for Innovation in Support of Learning
The Pillars are represented by the following diagram
Pillar 1: Pedagogy
Coaching, though expensive and time consuming, is a very critical component of Ghana Reads. It provides Educators (teachers, head teachers, circuit supervisors and subject officers) with hands on holding hands support to create the enabling environment for the pupils to have an enjoyable and unforgettable learning experience. OLE Ghana’s coaching pillar ensures that we help build teachers subject matter knowledge, pedagogy skills, ICT and ICT integration skills, confidence level, love for profession without teachers leaving the classroom for seat time training hence increasing time on task with pupils. It helps prepare the ‘DRIVER’ of the ‘quality education delivery vehicle’.
Pillar 2: Content
Content is found in the Basic eLearning Library (BeLL) which is housed on the Raspberry Pi server. The content covers resources that are used by the learner and also by teachers for their own professional development. It includes interactive, multimedia, text, etc resources that keep pupils engrossed in the reading/learning activity. The content pillar is the quality and relevant LUBRICANTS needed to fuel the ‘quality education delivery vehicle’
Pillar 3: Technology
Technology pillar is the ‘quality education delivery vehicle’. OLE Ghana,
i. baits children with what they enjoy having most, technology, to get them come to school, keep them in school and to learn.
ii. leverages the benefits of technology brings reduce the cost of teacher training and materials and increases time on tasks because teachers spend less of their time leaving? the classroom for training.
iii. uses technology to bring the resources to the very door steps of the end user
iv. use of technology allows
a. the teacher to successfully integrate OLE Ghana’s learning model in everyday teaching and learning in the classroom; a very important feature to entice teachers to readily accept the innovation dispelling fears that this is an added on task which is going to make it difficult for them to fully cover their curriculum
b. the pupils via the Tablet App make use of what is packaged by the teacher from the BeLL with the help of the LMS.
c. Various stakeholders via the Feedback portal to track usage of the learning system and progress being made by learners. Feedback data is automatically generated by the Tablet App, the BeLL and the LMS any time they are used. This data is sent to OLE servers any time there is internet connection. This is the only time internet is required for this model. Internet connection could be by way of modems and cost very little to send feedback data over a month.
To better understand the importance of the pillars one can always picture a scenario involving a passenger embarking on a journey to a given destination for the first time. He has never travelled the road before but he only knows that the road is rough: full of hills, dangerous curves and deep potholes. He can only depend on the driver to take him safely to his intended destination and to give him a smooth ride.
Depending on the experience he gets on the road, he would be comfortable to travel that road again. The experience he would get will depend on the driver. What kind of driver is he? How knowledgeable is the driver regarding the car to use, the lubricants to choose, how to relate to the passenger giving him assurance that all will be well and that his well being is of paramount importance to him the driver?
This driver could be likened to the teacher who has to drive the ‘quality education delivery vehicle’ A ‘driver’ who would fuel the passion of learners to learn to read and to learn for life? A ‘driver’ who would give the ‘pupil passenger’ that smooth ride which will make him want to travel the road of reading and learning over and over again? A driver who will know the right vehicle (technology) to chose for a particular journey and the attendant lubricants (content) to use and how to drive (pedagogy) the chosen vehicle to the desired final destination (quality life-long education).
